🌮 Dear Taco
Hello!
I am still very new to Trello, to be honest, I still have to set it up, but I am wondering. Is there a way to have Trello pick random items from the ToDo / Backlog and schedule them?
I have quite a big backlog and most of them have no real priority over the other. It would be nice if I just get a list of random ToDo's that I can work on that day or week.
Thanks!
~ Paul
Hey Paul! There absolutely is a way to do this! I actually utilize this in my meal planning, because I have a button that will pick a random card from a list in my board to pick out a meal for me, which it sounds like is what you’re looking for!
Head to automation —> Rules —> then Calendar.
Create a command for “every day” (or every week… whatever interval you’d like), then go to the “move” section for commands, and look for this one:
You can specify your backlog list, in the first box, and then your “to do” list in the second.
Then every day (or week), it will randomly grab one (or more) random cards from that backlog list and queue it up for you in your to do list!
If you don’t want a new one every day, you could also create board button that does it as well. Just head to Automation —> Buttons —> Board Button, and create a button called “make to do” (or whatever you’d prefer to call it), and set it to the same action above.

💡 Use Case Idea
I actually got this idea from
- faithful reader of this substack! I'm still fleshing out exactly how I want the board to work, but since I answer a lot of question in the Atlassian Community, I want to follow up on the questions I answer and make sure the answers get accepted (aka - users find what they need!)To do that, I’ve created a board where I send questions that I’ve answered (using a PixieBrix extension I built that quickly saves links in Trello with a due date of next week after I add it).
When a card is due, I have an automation rule that will move to the “Follow Up On” list. So I can just review the cards in that list, click on the links attached to them and follow up to make sure the asker got the question they need!
Now I just need to automate actually responding to the question and checking they found their answer… I’ll save that for another newsletter edition.
See you all next week!
