Automation, automation, automation... it's what we do in Trello
I didn't plan it but pretty much everything in today's newsletter revolves around automation in Trello!
Happy Thursday everyone! Thank you so much for the overwhelming response of folks who want to read my Trello book and are willing to leave a review!! 🙏 It’s really exciting to build something and see folks so excited for it. Can’t wait to share it all with you, and I appreciate you all cheering me on along the way.
Now let’s dive into more Trello stuff for the week.
🌮 Dear Taco
This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.
Hi Brittany! Wondering if there is a way to use automation to convert a card to a checklist item in another existing card?
~Erin
Hey Erin! There absolutely is! It just depends on how you define the relationship between that current card and another card.
You’ll want to use the Cascade section of automation to define what that “other existing card” is. You could do this by saying, “find the first card linked in attachments,” or “find card with name ToDo”… or whatever the card name is. You can learn more about finding and looking up cards here. (If it’s not always the same card and you don’t want to link them, you might need to use a custom field to specify the name of the card you want so that when you run the automation, you can say “find card with name {{%cardToFind}}” or something like that to dynamically pull the custom field value and search for a card with that name… Read this to learn more about referencing custom field values in automation.)
From there, you need to use the action for “add checklist item” and make the checklist item name {triggercardname}, which will make the checklist item the name of the card.
You can even add another action to go back and link the newly created item with the card.
Although you might need to play around with this last part a bit to get the logic to happen in the right order.
Want to submit your question? Maybe it’ll be featured next week!
🙋 Britt’s Pick
I’ve never been great at journaling, and I didn’t think AI would make much of a difference, but I've been using Rosebud AI Journal for about a month or so now, and I love it! I only broke my streak one day.
I love that it asks me thoughtful questions about my journaling because I often don't know what to say, so it helps me dive deeper and then gives me a good summary of what I've been working through and honestly puts it into better words than I can!
I love the weekly summaries, too, helping me notice trends and what's going on in my life. I also think the ability to capture "action items" from my journaling separates this from other tools.
I've never seen anything else do this, but after I write an entry, I can view suggestions, and it will let me "manifest" them (which basically means add to a do list). And I can tell that having reminders to incorporate things that tend to bring me joy has been really helpful for my mental health!
If you use my referral link, you’ll get your first month free, so there’s no reason not to try it!
🗞 New(s) And Upcoming
Trello’s bringing some updates to the automation section! Have you noticed the new layout and helpful hints as you click through the section?
My Trello book is launching on August 11th!!! If you signed up to get on the “review list” I sent out last week, you should get your digital copy soon! This reminds me I need to follow up with my publisher and figure out why those haven’t been sent out yet 🤔
I’ll have more details about the launch coming soon, including a discount code that you can use for preordering and some goodies that I’m going to offer my loyal fans who purchase a copy.

💡 Use Case Idea
We’ve had a lot of new subscribers lately, so for anyone who hasn’t heard before, I want to make sure you know about the board that I am most proud of: My Meal Planning Board.
If I were getting my Ph.D. in Trello and had to do a dissertation, I’d probably write it about this board because it shows off so many cool features in Trello and how to use them, from custom fields to every single type of automation (card buttons, board buttons, date automation, etc.)
Let me know what you think, and if you want to use something like this, there are templates in the blog post, but I will warn you… it requires quite a lot of building automation rules!
Special shoutout to my premium sponsors!
