This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.
This week’s question is from a new subscriber! I answered them over email, but I wanted to share because I think others might be wondering the same thing.
Recently my automation for adding the card creator to the card automatically appears... To have stopped. I'm sure I had it working before using the {{%cardcreator}} variable, but I'm also questioning my own sanity... Do you know If that variable was removed?
Also.. I'm struggling to find good examples of regex in trello automation - do you have any tips??
Dear new subscriber,
You’re not crazy - they recently changed the card composer and you can't add people by typing @ or # to add labels. They may add some functionality of that back, but in the mean time folks are suggesting automation, so you're in the right place! The variable i think you're looking for is {creatorusername} (docs).
Also, here's a couple videos i have about using regex in automation:
- I also briefly touch on it about 6.5 minutes into this video:
Here's a screenshot of what some regex in a rule looks like
You also may want to check out the Atlassian Community - if you search the Trello section for "regex" you'll find some examples!
Want to submit your question? Maybe it’ll be featured next week!

Lightweight ways to customize Trello - my latest blog post live on the Trello blog today!! I got to talk about two of my favorite things: Trello and PixieBrix.
It sounds like the removal of the Card Aging Power-Up has been temporarily paused. Turns out lots of folks were actually pretty reliant on that Power-Up, so if you’re one of them, don’t worry—the Trello team is dedicated to finding a solution for you! (Read through this post and share your feedback if it hasn’t already been addressed.)
