This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.
I'd like to create a button to automatically remove one attachment from a card and add another, but I'm struggling with the removal part.
My attachments are both pictures that I've uploaded to Imgur, so I attach them as links (say https://i.imgur.com/PrettyPic.png) and they show up on the card as PrettyPic.png. As far as I can see, my only option for removing attachments thought automation is the 'remove link' command, so I tried putting the Imgur link in there and it didn't work. I discovered that when you open the attachment, it's stored on the Trello card as a Trello link that looks like https://trello.com/1/cards/%5Blongnumber#1%5D/attachments/%5Blongnumber#2%5D/download/PrettyPic.png
where longnumber#1 is the long card ID, but longnumber#2 changes with each attachment, even on the same card. Because I can't predict longnumber#2, I thought wildcards might be my answer, so I tried making the command "remove link https://trello.com/1/cards/%7B*%7D/PrettyPic.png" and that did nothing. I also tried with https://trello.com/1/cards/%7Bcardidlong%7D/attachments/%7B*%7D/download/PrettyPic.png and with {?} and {/} instead of {}.
https://trello.com/1/cards/%7Bcardidlong%7D/attachments/%5Blongnumber#2%5D/download/PrettyPic.png does work if you have the correct longnumber#2 (so it's not a problem with putting automation variables in a link), but that's the only thing I can't predict! Do you have any idea what variable or form of wildcard might work? Or is there another way to make a button to remove a particular attachment (but not all attachments) that I'm missing?
Thank you!
Hey Anna,
This is deep stuff here! I don’t see a ton of use cases for automation with attachments, but whenever I’ve looked I’ve never really found it to do quite what the person needs… so I’m sorry to report that I might not be much help here.
I’m trying to replicate your workflow, and when i attach a link from imgur, it DOES come through as an actual link, and then i can use automation to remove that link.
For example, i added `https://imgur.com/gallery/wonder-woman-brawny-editions-Vrypeqe` to the card, and then made a button that removes link `https://imgur.com/gallery/wonder-woman-brawny-editions-Vrypeqe` from the card, and it worked.
So im wondering if you can see if you have some settings in imgur or something that might be making it save as an attachment to the card as a png instead of as a link?
I also know i’m a bit behind in my backlog of Taco questions, and there have been some changes to the ui recently that might have changed how these links work, so I’m curious if if those updates have solved it or if you’re still experiencing this!

Term of the week
Checklist items: embeddable checklists inside of Trello cards, allowing you to assign members and due dates (if you pay for Trello)
Tip of the week
Checklist items are powerful tools in Trello, and they just became even more powerful with a Checklist Power-Up I’m going to share with you in a second. They’re great for creating subtasks inside a card and delegating tasks within a specific project.
💡 Inspiration and ideas
Here are some reasons you might want to use checklists in Trello:
subtasks for a main project
keep track of who is meant to do what and when to achieve a larger goal
shopping lists (each card is a category or section of the store, or a card is just one big shopping list)
SOPs (I use them to remind me which steps i need to do in what order for things like creating videos or setting up my camper)
milestones (mini goals on the way to achieve a big goal!)
🤔 What do you use checklists for??
🍷 Pairs well with Trello
Sticking with the theme of checklists today, I actually discovered a Power-Up recently called Checklist Summary by Mig/Handy Power-Ups, and I think this is what we need to finally make checklists more than aesthetically pleasing, but actually useful and actionable.
This Power-Up allows you to view and edit all your checklist items across all boards in one handy table. You can filter, sort, and even group them.
This is huge because previously if you wanted to see all your checklist items in one place, you had a few options:
Go to your home page - trello.com/ - and the top part of the page shows YOUR upcoming checklist items. (Great, but not really a lot of ways to sort, and also doesn’t include other people’s if you need to see that.)
View them on the Calendar View in a board. Checklist items with due dates to appear on a calendar, but only in the Board Calendar View, and NOT the Workspace Calendar View, and they don’t work in Timeline View.
Automation to create linked cards for each checklist item. We had a great chat about this on the last Monthly Trello AMA, and while it’s not terribly complicated to build, it’s sometimes more automation than someone wants (and more than you really need if you’re just trying to see all your checklist items in a view).
That’s what makes this Power-Up so special is it truly introduces some new functionality that give you a table to view all your checklist items, take action on them, and see how they fit into the larger picture.
⚡ Automation tips
Speaking of automation, if you want to establish parent/child relationship with a card and it’s checklist items,
wrote a great article in the Trello Community explaining exactly how it’s done.Read about building parent/child relationships with cards
I use this process in my boards where I want to have a card for a main project or goal, and then associate other cards with that project and keep things in sync.
