Handling Attachments in Trello
Adding them, removing them, downloading them... plus lots of other Trello goodies!
Happy Thursday! 👋 Team ‘24 is almost here, and I simply cannot WAIT. So excited to see all my Atlassian friends, spend some time with the Trello team, and probably acquire some new swag!

🌮 Dear Taco
This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.
We’ve updated a vital document for our editorial board. Is there a way to automatically remove or add attached docs from all cards in a list? On the board?
~ Karisa at Ocean Blue Project
Hey Karisa,
So, at first, I read this question as “download” attachments from all cards, so I started researching that, and was happy to see there is a Power-Up that lets you download all the attachments on a card, list, or board! That’s kinda cool. (I’ll dive into this a bit more in the Featured Power-Up section.)
But back to your question about removing/attaching documents, if they are links, you have some options in automation:
This is one of the actions that you can do for instance, when a card is moved into a list. So you could make an automation rule that says when a card is moved into x list, add link y (or remove link y).
But unfortunately those actions wouldn’t exist on a list or board level (as in, you can’t make a board button that says find all the cards in list X and add this attachment.)
Not exactly automation, but better than opening cards one by one and doing this, have you checked out the Bulk Actions Power-Up? You can select multiple cards and add links to all of the selected cards.
However, once again, this isn’t for actual files, just links (which may work in your case). And I actually don’t see a way to remove links or attachments from cards in bulk.
I hope this helps or gives you some ideas!
Want to submit your question? Maybe it’ll be featured next week!
🗞 New(s) and Links
Couldn’t make it earlier this week? Don’t worry,
and I recorded!Watch the recording to learn how to use the new admin tools, count up your collaborators, and get answers to some other common questions about the workspace changes in Trello.
Team 24 is coming up, and boy am I excited.
If I had to guess, most of you probably won’t be able to make it to Team ‘24 (Atlassian’s annual user conference). 😭
But don’t worry, because you’ve got me, and I’m going!
I have a question for you.
What would you do if you were there? Are there any questions you’d ask the Trello team? Things you’d do or look for? Specific vendors you’d want to chat with?
I want you to be able to experience team vicariously through me. I’ll do or ask just about anything you need me to. (Just about. This is Vegas, okay? I have to have some boundaries 😂) Click the button to tell me what to do!
🛎️ Trello Tip of the Week
For my spreadsheet friends, if you’re missing that view in Trello… try Table View.
You can add labels, due dates, and members, and move lists… all from the Table View in Trello, making it feel like a spreadsheet. But you can still dive into a row by clicking on it.
(What I really like about this is using Workspace Table View to combine cards from multiple boards in one view.)
💡 Use Case Idea
Content Library
I like to use Hardcover (a better version of Goodreads) to keep track of the books I want to read, but unfortunately, there’s nothing really like it for all the other mediums in the world, like articles, podcasts, YouTube, online courses, etc.
So of course I have a Trello board. :)
It’s pretty straightforward, each list is a medium and each card is a link!
I add cards to the board from anywhere on the web via automation with PixieBrix. And when I’m looking for content to go through, I’ve got a whole repo waiting for me.
I want to add some more automation in here where I use HTTP requests to look up data about movies when I add them so there’s not just a title, but a summary as well. I’d to this by using the get URL action under the Content actions. Haven’t set it up yet, but if you’re interested in knowing how it works, comment or reply back and I’ll make sure to let you know when I do!
💪 Featured Power-Up
I discovered this by trying to answer a Dear Taco question, and while it didn’t solve the question, I thought it was a really useful Power-Up that I have heard people ask for a way to download attachments from multiple cards across a board.
This Power-Up lets you do it, all with a click.
Use the Board Button to download all the attachments across the board, or use the List Actions to download all the attachments in a specific list.
It looks each attachment is a credit, and you get a certain amount of free credits (100), and then you can buy more if you want. (You can get 4000 credits for $10… that’s a lot of downloads!)
Definitely have a look at Attachments Downloader if you’re using Trello for storing documents and need to quickly pull attachments in bulk from your cards.
