First of all, I want to say welcome! We had a lot of new subscribers join in the last week, and I’m thrilled to have you part of the How To Trello Fam! You can always comment on this post or reply back to this email if you have questions, thoughts, or ideas for making this newsletter better.
Now on to Trello business 🫡
I had a wild idea last weekend and instead of finishing my Due Date Power-Up (yes I’m still working on that), I created a Chrome Extension that shows a random Trello card everytime I open a tab.
The inspiration behind this was that I am tired of highlighting quotes in books and then never actually going back and re-reading them. I was like, what if i had something that randomly would show me those quotes?
So I created a Chrome Extension where you pick a Trello board and every time you open a new tab, you’ll see a random card from that board, beautifully displayed.
Here’s a video showing how it works:
I’d love for you to give it a try and let me know what you think!
Next up… should i see if i can make a mobile app that does this too??? That might be too ambitious 😂
🌮 Dear Taco
This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.
Automation variables - how to find out what they are or what could be included when creating automations.
~Bec
Bec, it’s your lucky day because I LOVE to talk about Automation Variables.
These are dynamic fields that take your Trello automations to the next level. If you’ve ever wanted to include some info from a Trello card as part of your automation, you’ll use Automation Variables.
Card info: For instance, you can use things like {cardname} to reference the name of a card in something, like an email or another card.
Dates: You can also use them to dynamically add times and dates. For instance, if you create a list every week with automation, you can include {weeknumber} in the name and it will dynamically pull the current week number, making it easy to distinguish between previous weeks.
Whodunit: This is my favorite… if you use {username} that grabs whoever is doing the action. So if you want to keep track of who is doing a specific thing, set up an automation that posts a comment with {username} and the action.
Want to learn more? I wrote an entire post about My Favorite Automation Variables and how you can use them.
Want to submit your question? Maybe it’ll be featured next week!
🗞 Coming up
I’ll be speaking virtually at the ACE Lansing chapter about the new Trello 2.0! It’s a free virtual event, and open to anyone, even if you don’t regularly use your hand as a map and say “ope”!
🛎️ Newbie tips
New to Trello? This section will help you get up to speed and become a pro before you know it!
Tip of the week
Use labels when you think of something you’d want to sort or filter your board by (like categories or types). Use lists to describe parts of a process or stages of a workflow (like drafting, reviewing, publishing).
