Happy Thursday! How are we liking the new format? Also we’ve just crossed the 1k subscribers milestone! 🎉 What should we do to celebrate??

Send me your ideas, but for now, let’s jump into Trello:

🌮 Dear Taco

This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.

Dear Taco,

I am looking for a way to put the current daily weather forecast on the cards that we are using for business. I found you on youtube and very impressed with Trello and all your videos! I got your book and currently reading that to get up to speed everything Trello. We are looking to use Trello for daily logs for a construction company. We would like to be able to add the weather forecast in order to show the clients why there might be a delay or why certain items were not delivered to the job site. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Oooh this is a fun one! So this is possible, but a bit advanced, so stick with me.

Also disclaimer: I can’t actually get this to work at the moment, but it really should. I’ve filed a ticket with the Trello team to track down the answer to this, and if you’re like YES THIS IS THE SOLUTION FOR ME, reply back and let me know and I’ll let you know what I find out.

So, there’s no Power-Ups that do this, but there’s a hidden escape hatch in the Trello automation actions that will let you interact with other tools. Pick any of the triggers (in your case it might be “every day”, or it could be a card button that you click), and go to the “Content” group and look at the very bottom.

That “get” url field lets you make an API request to fetch data, and then use the response from that API to do other actions, like post a comment!

I just looked at https://openweathermap.org/ and they have an API you can use to fetch data about the weather. You can read their docs to learn more about what all you can get from them.

So let’s say you have custom fields on cards called Lat and Lon that hold those values, you can paste something like this in that [URL] field on the action to reference a card’s custom fields and get a response with the weather.

https://api.openweathermap.org/data/3.0/onecall?lat={{%Lat}}&lon={{%Lon}}&appid={YOUR-APP-ID}

Then, you’d add another action for posting a comment (or wherever else you’d like it) with the weather. With this specific API, you might do something like:

Temp: {httpresponse.current.temp}

I created a button on a card called “Get Weather” to do this, so whenever I click it, it gets the values from Lat and Lon and then pings the API and posts a comment with info from the response!

A bit technical, but unfortunately about the best I can offer 😭 But that is a great idea for a Power-Up!

Want to submit your question? Maybe it’ll be featured next week!

🛎️ Trello Tip of the Week

This is a new section! I’m going to share a super simple and quick Trello tip. It might be a keyboard shortcut, it might be a hidden feature, or it might just be an idea. But it will help you with your day-to-day Trello activities!

Wish you could save filters in Trello boards? You kinda can. When you add filters, notice the url changes. You can bookmark that url and come back to it anytime to see the same filters applied.
