Trello hack is fake news, but automation magic is real 🪄
Happy February! We’re already a month into 2024. How’s your Trello setup holding up? Needing to make any tweaks?
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Trello organizing everything for my new camper and truck!! Super excited to get it all set up and ready for adventure.
Here’s what you’ll find each week
🌮 Type a card name and link it to your card automatically

⚡ [PREMIUM] Use automation to create template cards
🌮 Dear Taco
This is a section where readers can submit their Trello questions, and each week I’ll pick one and answer it! It’s like “Dear Abby” but make it trello. Have a question you want to submit? Share it here.
I have about 1,007 cards in 20 lists. Is there any easy way to apply linking to other cards, such:
Card 500 in the description says "on card 24" and wherever "card" + # is it links to a said card? Hopefully automated so I don't have to manually add the links lol
~Chris
Hey Chris!
I’m going to assume your cards are literally named “500” or something like that because you’ll need the exact match to work.
But what you should be able to do is have a trigger that looks for a card description that contains card {*}. That will grab whatever comes after “card”, so the number.
Like this:
Next, you’ll want to go to the Cascade section of actions and choose the “find a card titled” action. For the title use {wildcard1}. This will look for whatever was found after the word card.
Then click Add another action and in the same section, choose the “link cards together” option.
Let me know if that helps! If you reference multiple “card x” in the description, that might not work because I don’t know a good way to iterate through multiple instances of “card x” and do it consistently for each one, rather than trello thinking it did the job after the first instance.
Also if you’re interested in replacing the text in the description of the trello card with the link rather than adding it as an attachment, this is possible, but you’ll need to use regex and do something with rewriting the card description.
You’d use the same trigger of “when description contains card {*}” but instead of “find” you’d use “lookup card” and then you’d use the set cards description action and have some regex replace “card x” with {foundcardlink}.
(You can learn more about wildcards in Trello here!)
Want to submit your question? Maybe it’ll be featured next week!

Were you spooked by the fake news about Trello being hacked? Don’t worry, Atlassian conducted an investigation, and there was no evidence found of any unauthorized data accessed. You can read more in the post in the Atlassian Community.

🛎️ Trello Tip of the Week
Did you know Trello has a desktop app? And a mobile app? You can use Trello on any device. Admittedly, I prefer to use it in the browser (Chrome, specifically) because I’ve built automation on top of it that runs in the browser, but if you’re not using any Chrome Extensions to interact with Trello, you might like the Desktop app to have a separate window completely dedicated to Trello!
💡 Use Case Idea
Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I have a couple of passions outside of Trello and one of them is cats :) We just got a new litter of foster cats, and these are literal babies, they’re about 10 days old 😲
It’s super important to keep track of these kittens, from their weight to anything I notice about them like whether they have any rashes or weird bumps, if they’re not eating, or if I notice any of them getting sick.
So of course you know I’m using Trello for that!
There’s also a lot to do with kittens from cleaning up after them and keeping their environment as clean as possible to holding them and letting them get used to people being around.
So while this is not the most complicated board I’ve ever made, it’s something simple and easy to use that allows me to keep all my information in one place, and it will be useful when we take them back and I have to try to write a personality profile about each one after having kept track of several different ones 😂
While you may not have foster cats, I’m willing to bet you’ve got something in your life that you need to keep track of specific notes about and regular “maintenance”, whether it’s your vehicle, your home, or heck even stuff you’re doing with your kids and family members!
